The sessions will give educators in Grades 3-5 an opportunity to explore:

  • Their own mathematical content knowledge and problem-solving habits of mind.
  • The Landscape of Learning, which is comprised of the foundational big ideas in multiplication and how these are directly related to (and essential for) developing students’ understanding of division.
  • The role of rich tasks in developing the big ideas and strategies in multiplication and division.
  • The role of mathematical models (e.g., the double number line, the array, the ratio table) to support and deepen students’ multiplicative reasoning.
  • Different kinds of multiplication problems to help participants construct an understanding of specific multiplication models (e.g., grouping, ratio, area).
  • How to incorporate the CCSS Mathematical Practices through talk moves.
  • Assessment tools to track student learning in multiplication and division.
  • Video examples of key multiplication and division lessons.

Participants will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of the Landscape of Learning (a developmental trajectory to help educators assess student reasoning in number).
  • A repertoire of rich tasks that can be used to differentiate learning in multiplication and division.
  • Specific assessments that can be used to examine students’ understanding of multiplication and division.
