Grades K-2: Assessing Students’ Problem Solving Strategies

Who should attend: All Math Educators Grades K-2, including Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Coaches in the grade levels.

What has the greatest impact on student learning? According to researcher John Hattie, providing actionable feedback correlates highly with improvements in student learning. In order to provide actionable feedback, we have to assess what our students know. This means what and how we assess and the ways in which we respond to student thinking determines the depth of student learning. At the heart of this feedback loop are quality assessment tasks.

What constitutes a quality assessment?

In this one-day institute we will explore this question and different types of assessment (quizzes, conferring, rich tasks) and which ones maximize student learning in problem solving. We will consider:

  • Big ideas in number using Fosnot & Dolk’s Landscape of Learning.
  • Feedback that helps students develop and deepen their mathematical reasoning and writing.
  • Effective assessment practices by analyzing our own students’ work and providing and critiquing the feedback we give.

Some key questions we will examine are:

  • What message do we want our assessments to convey to our students? 
  • What decisions do we want our students to make about their own learning as a result of our assessment practices?
  • What evidence do we have that our assessment and instructional practices are effective?

Video examples and transcripts will be used to highlight assessment techniques for effective conferring with students.
