Traditional algebra curriculum focuses on students’ ability to solve algebraic equations or inequalities, irrespective of context. With far greater frequency, Common Core assessments (NY state exams/Regents, PARCC exams, and the SAT/ACT) call on students to write algebraic equations/inequalities from a given situation or context (i.e. word problem). These contexts are often dense, lexically challenging, and above all, intimidating — students often give up without even reading them, defeated from the start.
In this institute, teachers will learn new and powerful strategies to help students make sense of mathematical problems, and reliably derive correct equations and inequalities.
