Grades 7-12: Using Technology to Enhance Mathematical Understanding

Type of PD: 1-Day Institute
Institute Dates: 11/10/16
Location: The Clinton School For Writers and Artists: 10 E 15th St, New York, NY 10003
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (1 hour lunch break included)

Who should attend: All Math Educators Grades 7-12, including Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Coaches in the grade levels.

The types of technology that are available to secondary students for free or at low cost can allow students to experience mathematics in new ways and ask questions that would not be salient otherwise.

This one-day workshop helps math teachers to think deeply about the benefits of using technology to facilitate the development of deep mathematical understanding of complex ideas at the secondary level. When used at the appropriate time with the appropriate content, their purpose moves beyond a motivating tool, a reward system, or a means to entertain the “fast” kids.

When used well, technology can engage learners in tasks that are high in cognitive demand and allow for students to engage in rich problem-solving opportunities that would be too complex or abstract without the visualization tools and complex computation afforded by specific technological tools.

This workshop will give educators in Grades 7-12 an opportunity to explore:

  • A variety of free and “for fee” technology such as Desmos, The Geometer’s Sketchpad, Mathalicious, and TinkerPlots.
  • How technology can promote the Common Core Mathematical Practices.
  • Pedagogy related to teaching with technology: When and how technology can be used.
  • The types of questions technology fosters that otherwise would not be accessible to students.
  • The effective uses of technology in developing higher-order thinking.

Participants will leave with:

  • Technology-based activities to use in their own classrooms.
  • A clearer understanding of the meaningful use of technology to teach mathematics.
  • Strategies for incorporating technology into their lessons.
  • Additional technology resources they might want to consider.
