Grades K-2: Developing Strategies & Big Ideas in Early Number and Addition

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (1 hour lunch break included) 

Cost: $750 per person

Who should attend: All Math Educators Grades K-2, including Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Coaches in the grade levels.


Three sessions give educators in Grades K-2 an opportunity to explore:

  • Their own mathematical content knowledge and problem-solving habits of mind.
  • The Landscape of Learning, which is comprised of the foundational big ideas in early number (conservation, cardinality, etc.) and how these big ideas are the building blocks of addition and subtraction.
  • How to use one-on-one clinical interviews to assess student understanding and plan rigorous, developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
  • The role of: o Mathematical models (e.g., bead string and rekenrek) in developing early number big ideas and strategies. o Just-right games in differentiating student learning and developing the basic facts. o Math routines in developing number sense.
  • How to incorporate the CCSS Mathematical Practices via talk moves that develop reasoning and the capacity to argue mathematically.
  • Assessment tools to track student learning.
  • Video examples of key lessons.

Participants will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of the Landscape of Learning (a developmental trajectory to help educators assess student reasoning in number).
  • A repertoire of math games to use in their classrooms.
  • Specific mathematics routines.
  • One-on-one interviews and other assessments that they can use to assess student development.
