How important is it to represent student thinking during a mathematics conversation? Answer: Very important.
Anyone who has ever tried to model students’ thinking in real time knows how challenging it is. “How do we make the big ideas students are trying to articulate visible?” Part of the difficulty for teachers is that powerful models (like the bead string or the double number line) present certain challenges and can require a great deal of pedagogical experience.
In this practicum, we will explore how to model student thinking with the bead string, a powerful tool for developing many big ideas in number. Teachers will have an opportunity to (1) watch video of skillful facilitation with the bead string model, (2) practice how to model student thinking in real time using the bead string model, and (3) examine the kinds of mini-lessons for which the bead string model is ideal.
Teachers will leave this workshop with:
A repertoire of talk moves they can use to deepen the conversation and insights into how these pedagogical tools can be used support their recording of student thinking.
