Grades K-2: Using Mathematical Models to Develop Computation in Addition & Subtraction

Type of PD: 2-Day Institute
Institute Dates: 4/10/18, 4/17/18
Location: P.S. 59M- Beekman Hill International (02M059), 233 E 56th St, New York, NY 10022
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (1 hour lunch break included)

Cost: $500 per person
Who should attend: All Math Educators Grades K-3, including Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Coaches in the grade levels.

The CCSS specify that by the end of Grade 3, students must possess a robust understanding of addition and subtraction and have a variety of strategies to compute within 1,000.  To meet this expectation, educators in grades K-3 must devote significant time to developing their students’ addition and subtraction strategy toolbox. This workshop helps educators address the following questions:

  • What are the key addition and subtraction strategies students need to develop?
  • Is there a learning trajectory for addition and subtraction strategies (e.g., Are some strategies precursors to others?)?
  • What routines and mini-lessons are best suited for developing computational fluency in addition and subtraction?
  • What is the role of mathematical models in developing fluency?
  • What pedagogical tools do educators need to utilize to ensure student learning?

This workshop will also focus on how educators can use guided mini-lessons to develop their students' mental-math and paper/pencil strategies in addition and subtraction. Educators will have the opportunity to:

  • Plan and teach mental-math mini-lessons.
  • Examine specific pedagogical tools (e.g., use of questions and mathematical models) that support the development of students’ computational fluency.
  • Analyze student strategies (and talk) to think about how to develop their mathematical reasoning and ability to communicate that reasoning with precision and clarity.
