Choosing just-right problems that are relevant, have many entry points, and maintain a high level of cognitive demand is an essential component of meeting the needs of a wide range of students. This institute will give educators an opportunity to:

  • Explore their own problem-solving habits of mind.
  • Develop an understanding of some of the big mathematical ideas.
  • Understand differences between a typical math textbook problem and a genuine mathematical inquiry.
  • Experience pedagogy that engages students, and initiates thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving through collaboration and mathematical discourse.
  • Analyze video examples of relevant lesson components.

Participants will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of what constitutes rich problems and their role in a mathematics classroom.
  • Ways of mapping out the mathematical content of rich problems and how to use that content to develop specific mathematical skills.
  • Rich mathematical tasks they can try in their own classrooms.
  • Resources and guidelines for implementing required curricular materials using a “rich-task lens.”
  • Specific strategies to select and adapt standard tasks into rich tasks.

Participants of this institute have the option of attending a 2-day follow-up Teaching Learning Community, which offers educators a chance to get together across schools to design, enact, and reflect on rich mathematics tasks in secondary mathematics classrooms.
