Upper Elementary and Middle School
Meredith Somsel has spent the last ten years uncovering what students know about math. She worked as a middle school math teacher in Maryland and New York City for five years before transitioning into coaching. Meredith has worked with teachers in K-12 throughout the five boroughs, and is passionate about making the mathematics come to life for teachers and students. Her two young children have given her a new perspective on how children learn, and has motivated her to raise the bar on what all students can achieve.
Q: What are you most passionate about in education?
I am passionate about helping teachers develop a love and understanding of the content they teach, and the manner in which they teach it. This helps their students make sense of the math, and build on their understandings as they comprehend the bigger picture that situates all of the individual topics.
Q: What do you love about Metamorphosis?
The sense of community. The more I've get to know people, and to watch other consultants working together, the more I realize how lucky I am to be part of a unique community of professional learners.
Q: What do you want to influence in education?
I'd like to help all educators - administrators, teachers, parents, students, policy makers - realize that there is so much more to education than just opening a book and following a prescribed lesson. Over time I hope to extend my reach to help brign about systemic change in the broader educational community
As always, Meredith, I appreciate the questions and feedback you provide about my teaching of math. Your feedback challenges my assumptions about what I think I know and forces me to dig really deep with the mathematics.
