Building Fluency That Lasts, Grades K-6 • Session 1 – Wednesday, 1/21, Session 2 – Thursday, 2/26
Routines that Go Beyond Memorization (2-part series).
Do you want your students to develop fluency that goes beyond memorizing facts? Are you looking for quick, meaningful routines that help students make sense of numbers and strengthen their flexibility and confidence?
In these workshops, we’ll examine daily fluency routines that develop students’ conceptual understanding and strategic flexibility, leveraging visual representations and mathematical discourse to support fluency that lasts beyond memorization. You’ll experience routines that support students in noticing patterns, understanding numerical relationships, and selecting strategies that make sense to them — all while keeping the focus on understanding rather than speed.
We’ll look closely at how to plan and facilitate these routines, including how to:
• Choose goals that align with big mathematical ideas in your grade band
• Select numbers and examples that surface those ideas
• Ask purposeful questions that uncover and extend student thinking
• Support all learners in participating and sharing strategies
We will also examine fluency routines embedded in popular curricula (such as Illustrative Mathematics, i-Ready, and Eureka Math Squared) and discuss how to adapt them to intentionally build reasoning across the year.
Participants will leave with:
• A set of ready-to-use routines tailored to their grade band
• Planning tools and templates to help integrate routines into daily instruction
• A repertoire of teacher moves that support meaningful discourse and mathematical agency
• A deeper understanding of the concepts, strategies, and models that anchor fluency
