Amy Withers

Elementary & Middle School Mathematics

Amy is passionate about collaborating with teachers to craft student-centered math lessons where students have opportunities to wonder, problem-solve, communicate their thinking, pose questions and make mistakes. Amy began her teaching career as a 5th grade teacher in a dual language (English/Spanish) classroom. She taught 5th and 6th grade and then became a math coach for grades K – 8 at Amistad Dual Language School in Upper Manhattan. During her time as a classroom teacher, she was lucky to attend many workshops with Math in the City as well as other professional development opportunities in mathematics, during which she began to re-learn all of the math she had “learned” as a child. She started and completed the Math Leadership Program at Bank Street, where she had the chance to immerse herself in a community of mathematics teachers and leaders committed to continually discovering the beauty of mathematics and finding ways to share that with all students.

As a coach with Metamorphosis, Amy works with both elementary and middle school teachers, and enjoys sharing her love of mathematics with teachers and students alike. Amy also teaches graduate students at Bank Street College of Education in both the Math Leadership Program and Teacher Preparation Programs.
