Susan Picker

Secondary Mathematics

As an educator and coach, Susan Picker cares most deeply that students are in mathematics classes where the clear message about math is: It is supposed to make sense!

Susan first taught mathematics at Brandeis and Murry Bergtraum High Schools, and then worked as a staff developer for the Manhattan High Schools Superintendency, where she presented workshops, coached math teachers and piloted a new Discrete Mathematics course. She went on to coordinate middle and high school professional development for Community District 2 and then worked as a coach and mathematics specialist for grades 6-12 in Region 9. After more than 28 years with the NYC DOE, she continued her support for teachers in Math for America’s Early Career Fellowship, where she provided coaching and workshops.

Her experience also includes supervising student teachers and teaching as an adjunct professor at New York University and Brooklyn College, and as a lead teacher and instructor at Rutgers University’s Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics.

Susan holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Plymouth in Devon, England, and an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College. She has presented workshops and talks in the U.S., The Netherlands, Spain, Germany and England and is the author of a number of journal articles and book chapters.
