Discover how to spark rich mathematical thinking through Number Talks and Number Strings, two powerful routines that build both fluency and deep conceptual understanding. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how to set purposeful goals, anticipate and respond to student strategies, and use visual models to make thinking visible. Together, we’ll explore how to facilitate discussions that highlight key strategies, deepen understanding, and move all students forward in their mathematical thinking.
Join us for an interactive, hands-on workshop in which K-5 teachers will:
- Learn the difference between a number talk and a number string.
- Engage in number talks and number strings as learners to better understand their purpose and power.
- Analyze videos and/or live demonstrations of number strings with a focus on effective facilitation that advances a learning goal.
- Plan and rehearse number talks/number strings with other teachers who teach their grade level.
Teachers will leave with:
- A set of number talks/number strings to use with students in their classrooms.
- A planning template.
- A set of talk moves and strategic questions for focusing discussion on learning goals.
- An understanding of which visual models are most effective for representing different computational strategies and why.
Who should attend: K-5 teachers who want to improve their understanding and facilitation of number talks/number strings.
This workshop supports all five of the NYCPS Mathematics Shifts, particularly:
- Shift 1: Beginning with sensemaking
- Shift 3: Using discourse to deepen understanding
- Shift 4: Asset-based support
This workshop is also offered at your convenience and can be customized for your school or district.
