Use Models to support mathematics! Models are a wonderful way to “see” mathematics and to help students make sense of important mathematical concepts. “Mathematical modeling refers to the process of creating a mathematical representation of a real-world scenario to make a prediction or provide insight. There is a distinction between applying a formula and the actual creation of a mathematical relationship.” (Wikipedia). Wouldn’t it be thrilling to see lightbulbs going on in your student’s heads or hear the sound, “I get it!” echoing through the classroom? Models are the key.

Here is an example from Illustrative Mathematics, Grade 6, Unit 6, Lesson 1, as students are just beginning to make sense of algebraic equations:

This wonderful tape diagram allows students to “see” the nature of the additive and multiplicative relationships that students often struggle with.  These models allow students to see similarities and differences between these relationships and construct their own meaning.  Models are reasoning tools and are SO POWERFUL!  I encourage all teachers to employ models that allow students to “see” the math they are about to engage with.  Again, models allow access for all learners.
