Mathematics

Abby Gordon approaches every partnership from a learning stance, asking questions and seeking to understand, with the belief that educators are the chief learners in their classrooms. Abby spent most of 7th grade avoiding her math teacher, who was trying to get her to join the MathCounts club, because she didn’t think of herself as or want to be known as “a math person.” It took her several years of teaching language arts and history to realize that math education was her true passion, and that she — and anyone else who wanted to be — could actually be defined as “a math person.” After completing the Leadership in Mathematics Education program at Bank Street College of Education, Abby transitioned into a coaching role. She has since worked with teachers at dozens of schools in NYC and the Philadelphia area and also served as an adjunct at Bank Street, presented at conferences, and designed and taught workshops in New York’s Algebra for All program. Her particular passion is working with teachers to help change mindsets and outcomes among students traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, so that those students don’t run away from — and maybe in fact seek out — opportunities to study mathematics.
